What we stand for
Sustainability and ethical manufacturing are at the core of our values. We believe that we have a responsibility to respect the people who make our products and the environment from which our materials are derived from.
Over the last century, the natural world as we know it has been decimated by human activity leaving the protection and preservation of nature now more important than ever. As a result, we are constantly working to ensure our products are as kind to our environment as possible, whilst still remaining affordable.
We are constantly inspired by nature and it runs through all our products. This is why we don’t just stop there… The Illustrate team are personally committed to reducing our individual footprints too. We have efficient recycling waste systems in place in our office and we all commit to Plastic-Free Mondays where we have a ban on any single-use plastic use to reduce our workplace footprint. As a team, where we inevitably have some unavoidable plastic use we make Ecobricks to save it from landfill.
We package naked
Whether it’s our prints, greetings cards or the packaging we use to post your orders, it’s 100% recyclable or compostable.
We use recycled materials
All of our greetings cards, notebooks and sketchbooks are made from 100% recycled paper.
We use 100% FSC certified wood
Our wooden skate boards and phone cases are made from FSC certified wood, meaning that you can be rest assured that the wood comes from renewable and sustainably managed forests.
We plant trees!
For every skate deck sold and for every 10 phone cases we plant a tree!
We repair clothes
350,000 tonnes of unwanted wearable clothing goes to landfill every year in the U.K. We believe in good quality garments that are made to last. Should your garment break we offer a repair service for free, so that you can carry on enjoying your garment for years to come!
We use sustainable fabrics
We put a lot of time into sourcing sustainable fabrics such as GOTS certified organic cotton, Tencel, and recycled materials like recycled polyester made from plastic bottles in the Illustrate mini range and select men’s garments. Our Earth Positive range of clothing is made in low-carbon manufacturing facilities powered by green renewable energy and from low impact raw materials. Look out for this stamp to see whether your T-shirt was made using low carbon manufacturing.
All non-organic garments are being phased out and our 2019 goal is to have an entirely organic or recycled collection.
Where possible, we always go local
We source from local, trusted, sustainable suppliers for our Illustrate Eco range. Our Eco range is almost entirely plastic-free and only contains natural ingredients that are kind to the environment and to our skin.
Many of today’s garments are produced in exploitative factories in developing countries in high volume with very little respect to the person making them. We advocate against this by ensuring all our clothing manufacturing facilities are independently audited by the Fair Wear Foundation. Rest assured, the person that made your clothes work in a workplace where:
- Employment is freely chosen
- There is no discrimination in employment
- No exploitation of child labour
- Freedom of association and the right to collective bargaining
- Payment of a living wage
- No excessive working hours
- Safe and healthy working conditions
- Legally-binding employment relationship
We wholeheartedly respect and care about who makes our clothes.
Our Charity Work
We believe a collaborative effort is needed to ignite positive change in the world. This is why we have many partnerships with local and global charities so that our purchases can give back to society. Here are the charities you support by supporting us:
We participate in Fair Saturday every year in aid of chosen charities. In 2018 we raised money for FRANK water, a local charity working to improve sanitation in India and Nepal.
We are a refill registered business whereby we open our doors for free tap water bottle refills to curb plastic pollution from source.
We donate £2 from every stainless steel reusable bottle sale.
50% of the profits from rhino related products go to Poached Rhino, a charity working to curb rhino poaching in South Africa.
We participate in Fashion Revolution week every year and raise awareness for taking a stance against exploited garment workers in less developed areas of the world.
One Tree Planted are a not-for-profit organisation focused on global reforestation. Through the sales of skate decks and phone cases we have planted over a thousand trees across North America, South America, Asia, and Africa. Most of the projects help with restoration from forest fires and floods, as well as creating jobs, building communities, and protecting habitat for biodiversity.
Investing in the Future
We also donate stationery to areas in need. For every notebook sold we donate one to schools in developing nations.
